KURTZ BELIEVES IN HIS SIDE

BELLE VUE captain Brady Kurtz believes his side has the quality to defend the Premiership title.

The ATPI Aces secured their place in the play-offs with a comfortable 58-32 win over Birmingham at the National Speedway Stadium.

It had been a challenging week away from Manchester with heavy defeats at both Sheffield and Ipswich.

But Kurtz, who delivered a 12-point maximum, reckons his side have got what it takes when it comes to the crunch.

He said: “We’ve all seen that it’s been a s****y week, no question about that.

“I think it was important for all the boys to win some races and have a little bit of fun again.

“It’s been a bit of a sad time for us. There was a smile back on everyone’s faces again in the pits. It was definitely a better atmosphere.

“It’s been weird, we’ve had s****y away form all year. It’s pretty normal for us. We’ve never been great away. But we always try and pull something out at the end. I still believe we’ve got the team to do that, no question about it.

“Next week against Sheffield will be a tougher task. We’ll all need to be on our game.

“Now we’re into the semis, let’s get them.”

Dan Bewley only dropped a point against the Brummies and it included a breathtaking swoop round the boards to win heat 15.

He added: “I just had a weird night. We battled away in the pits trying to fix a problem. We don’t know what it was.

“The bike felt terrible all night. Heat 15 finally felt good and I was angry at it!

“We had an unknown problem and an unknown solution. But it’s all good!

“I feel like the last couple of meetings, it wasn’t our best work.

“This is where it matters now. But we’ve not been the strongest on the road. I think we all want to show what we are capable of.

“We just save it all year, we make people think we are s***. We’ve thrown everyone a dodgy one and given them a false sense of security!”

The ATPI Aces have two fixtures to go at home to Sheffield on Monday at midday and then to King’s Lynn.

Team boss Mark Lemon is also convinced his side can deliver when it really matters.

He said: “It wasn’t perfection but it was pretty damn close, a fantastic performance. It was a good team effort.

“We’re the youngest team in the Premiership and that has shown at times.

“We talk about our away form, if you really look into it, we’ve had meetings missing Brady or Norick and results haven’t quite gone our way.

“It’s a harsh criticism to be brutally honest. Most other teams have only won one more meeting away than us.

“We’re defending champions and I guess the pressure is off a little bit. Defending a title doesn’t usually happen. If it does for us then great, but we know there’s work to do.”
